With any form of travel and sport there is some element of risk, but gliding is a heavily regulated activity in the same way as powered flying. Gliders are made to withstand pressures well in excess of their recommended maximums, far from the demands of normal flight. By law the owner is required to have the glider annually tested, and all gliders are thoroughly checked before every first flight of the day. The instructors go through rigorous hours of training and must fly a set number of solo and instructional hours each year to retain their licences. The whole operation has restrictions, from flying law to weather limitations, which are fully abided by.
