The Aiming for Solo Package

Giving you certainty over your training budget

Following the success of our Aiming for Solo Packages introduced in 2016, we have now reshaped the courses to allow students to have a fixed budget to try and attain solo from a structured syllabus.

Let the dream of learning to fly become a reality at The Gliding Centre.

Our modern high performance glider fleet, with both winch and aerotow facilities, and our team of highly experienced gliding instructors combine to allow you to progress safely and rapidly through the British Gliding Association training syllabus.

With our Aiming For Solo course we offer an alternative to our courses or standard flying membership, it includes 12 months membership and a large allowance of launch, soaring, and instruction costs, up to the point of solo.

If you are interested in Aiming For Solo, please get in touch with us so we can discuss the course with you, make sure it is exactly what you need to get flying and perhaps arrange to come into the club to see how it all works!

It is for those who have tried gliding and been bitten by the bug!

The course affords the following:

  • 1 year’s membership of The Gliding Centre (TGC)
  • 75,000ft height allowance – which may be taken as
    • Winch launches (each winch launch = 1,000ft of allowance)
    • Aerotow launches (uses allowance 1:1, ie 2,500 Aerotow = 2,500 ft of allowance)
    • Motor glider (each 30 minutes = 3,000ft of allowance)
    • Some course lifetime limits exist – see Terms and Conditions for full details
    • 12 hours airtime, whichever comes soonest.

Launch and soaring fees are included within the course fee up until the earliest of:

  • First solo being completed
  • 60th winch launch
  • Twelve months anniversary of TGC joining date

If the flight allowances are fully used, or the 12 months period expires before the student has achieved solo standard, the course completes and standard club flying charges apply.

In all cases the full flying membership remains in place for a twelve-month period from the course start date, after which students can renew their membership at standard club rates.

It’s as simple as it sounds – one price that should easily get you to Solo without the uncertainty of training fees!

What about the weather?

We all know and love our wonderful British weather!  In fact, we can fly in most conditions, but some weather conditions are unsuitable for gliding, typically related to very strong winds, low cloud-base, poor visibility or rain.  We ask that you contact us either in the morning of your booked afternoon session or if you are booked to be with us at 9am for a morning session, you ring late afternoon the day before so that we can advise on the weather prospects.
